Why Amazing Spider-Man #361 Is Valuable

Amazing Spider-Man #361 is the first full appearance of Carnage, the serial killer Cletus Kasady bonded to an offspring of the Venom symbiote. David Michelinie wrote it and Mark Bagley drew it. Carnage has a brief cameo in #360, but #361 is the book collectors want.

Carnage became one of Spider-Man's biggest villains and the main villain of the 2021 film Venom: Let There Be Carnage. It is a key book of the Modern Age. For other issues, see our Amazing Spider-Man price guide.

How to Tell a First Print of ASM #361

  1. Second printing. Marvel reprinted the issue in 1992. The second printing has a silver cover and sells for much less.
  2. Newsstand vs direct. Newsstand copies have a UPC barcode, direct-edition copies have a Spider-Man image there. Both are first prints, and high-grade newsstand copies are scarcer.
  3. Later reprints. Facsimile editions and collections say so on the cover or in the indicia.
  4. Signatures. A Bagley signature adds value only when it is verified, for example by CGC Signature Series.

What Affects the Value of Your Copy

Many copies were saved in high grade, so only 9.8 copies bring a real premium. Grading a copy that will come back 9.4 often costs more than it adds. Learn more in how condition affects comic book value, raw vs graded comics and CGC vs CBCS, or see our comic book grading guide.
