Why Star Wars #1 Is Valuable
Star Wars #1 was Marvel's adaptation of the first film, written by Roy Thomas and drawn by Howard Chaykin. It reached newsstands in April 1977, before the movie opened, with a July 1977 cover date. It is the first Star Wars comic, and the series helped keep Marvel afloat in the late 1970s.
The regular edition was printed in large numbers, so its value depends on grade. The 35¢ variant is one of the most famous price variants of the Bronze Age, and it is the copy every Star Wars collector wants.

How to Spot a Star Wars #1 Reprint or Variant
Star Wars #1 was reprinted many times, often with the same cover. Check the price box in the top left corner first:
- 30¢ in a square box: the regular first printing.
- 35¢ in a square box: the rare price variant. Worth a closer look.
- 35¢ with a diamond and no UPC code: the Whitman edition sold in bags at department stores. It is common and worth far less than the price variant.
- "Reprint" or a later price: a second or later printing.
- Oversized books (Marvel Special Edition) and modern facsimile editions are reprints.

What Affects the Value of Your Copy
For the 30¢ edition, the jump from 9.4 to 9.8 is about five times the price, so condition is everything. For the 35¢ variant, even mid grades are worth thousands. Learn more in how condition affects comic book value, raw vs graded comics and CGC vs CBCS, or see our comic book grading guide.

Star Wars #1 FAQ
How much is a 1977 Star Wars #1 comic worth?
A regular 30¢ Star Wars #1 sells for about $500–700 in CGC 9.4, $765–1,150 in 9.6 and $3,000–3,200 in 9.8. The rare 35¢ variant sells for $6,000–7,000 in 8.0 and $16,000–25,000 in 9.0.
What is the Star Wars #1 35 cent variant?
It is a small test printing with a 35¢ cover price in a square box. Only about 350 copies have been graded by CGC, and a 9.6 Signature Series copy sold for a record $162,500. Do not confuse it with the common Whitman edition, which has a diamond around the price.
How do I know if my Star Wars #1 is a reprint?
Look at the price box. A 30¢ or 35¢ price in a square box is a first printing. A diamond, the word "reprint," a later price or an oversized format means a reprint or the Whitman edition.
Who wrote and drew the first Star Wars comic?
Star Wars #1 was written by Roy Thomas and drawn by Howard Chaykin. Marvel published it in April 1977, before the film was released.
