Whiz Comics

Whiz Comics is one of the cornerstone titles of the Golden Age of comics, published by Fawcett Publications and best known for introducing Captain Marvel (later known as Shazam). First released in 1940 with issue #2 (the numbering continued from an earlier canceled series), Whiz Comics quickly became one of the most popular comic book titles of the 1940s.

The landmark debut issue, Whiz Comics #2 (1940), featured the first appearance of Billy Batson, a young boy who transforms into the magical superhero Captain Marvel by uttering the word “SHAZAM!” Created by writer Bill Parker and artist C.C. Beck, Captain Marvel became a cultural phenomenon, even outselling Superman at the height of his popularity.

Throughout its run, Whiz Comics introduced readers to a variety of beloved characters, including:

  • Captain Marvel (Shazam) — the magical champion who became Superman’s biggest rival in popularity.
  • Ibis the Invincible — an ancient Egyptian prince revived with mystical powers.
  • Spy Smasher — a pulp-style hero fighting espionage threats during WWII.
  • Golden Arrow — a western-themed hero and expert archer.
  • Dan Dare — an adventurer and soldier of fortune.

One of the most famous aspects of Whiz Comics was the legal battle it triggered. DC Comics (then National Comics) sued Fawcett in the 1940s, claiming that Captain Marvel was too similar to Superman. After years of litigation, Fawcett eventually ceased publishing superhero comics in 1953, bringing Whiz Comics to an end with issue #155.

Today, Whiz Comics remains a prized Golden Age collectible, especially Whiz Comics #2, which is considered one of the most valuable and historically significant comic books ever printed. High-grade copies of this issue have sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars, reflecting its importance as the debut of one of the era’s most beloved superheroes.

If you are considering whether to sell comic books, Whiz Comics — particularly early issues featuring Captain Marvel — are among the most desirable Golden Age collectibles. Always check a current comic book price guide or consult experts to determine the true market value of your copies.
