The top-selling comic book last month was The Avengers 7

The top-selling comic book the previous month was Avengers 7. Out of nowhere, this issue became popular again among collectors and those who like to sell comic books. But why now?

The Avengers comic series

The 1963-1964 Avengers run is where Marvel first tried the idea of throwing a bunch of very different heroes into one book and letting it play out. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the series, and it quickly became a hit because the team didn’t act “perfectly.” Hulk stormed off, Thor disagreed with everyone, Iron Man tried to keep the peace, and somehow the group still managed to do their superhero things. That imperfect teamwork became the heart of the early Avengers comics.

The series kept growing in popularity through the 60s thanks to big moments: Captain America’s return, frequent lineup changes, the first appearances of villains like Kang and Ultron, and early crossovers with the Fantastic Four and X-Men.

Issue #1 introduced it all. Loki tries to trick the heroes, things get out of hand, and the group comes together almost by accident. It’s fast and a little goofy, and a perfect start to what would become one of Marvel’s biggest teams.

More about The Avengers issue 7

Avengers 7 (1964) introduces Immortus, a new time-traveling villain who turns out to be another future version of Kang. It’s the first hint that Kang’s whole timeline is a giant knot, and Marvel clearly had fun with it.

The Avengers issue 7 story is simple. Immortus wants the Avengers on his side, so he teams up with the Masters of Evil – Baron Zemo, the Enchantress, and the Executioner. Basically, a group that guarantees trouble the moment they appear on the scene. They try tricks, time traps, mind games, anything they can use against the team. Meanwhile, Immortus uses his time-traveling abilities, pulling different eras into the fight.

What makes this issue enjoyable is how fast and strange it gets. On this page, it’s a regular fight against evil. On the next one, it’s a battle in another century. It isn’t complicated, though, just early-Marvel “let’s see how weird we can get”. And that’s why people still like it.
