Why X-Men #1 Is So Valuable
X-Men #1 was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and introduced Professor X, Cyclops, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Beast, Angel, Iceman and Magneto. It cost 12 cents. The original series struggled and became reprints-only by 1970, but the 1975 relaunch turned the X-Men into Marvel's biggest franchise of the 1980s and 1990s, and later into a film and TV series.

Which X-Men #1 Do You Have?
Several comics are called "X-Men #1." Only the 1963 issue is worth thousands.

How to Spot an X-Men #1 Reprint
- Cover price. The original says 12¢. A copy priced 10d is a genuine UK pence edition from 1963 and is still valuable.
- Edition labels. The Marvel Milestone Edition and later facsimile editions say so on the cover or in the indicia.
- Paper. Originals are on off-white to tan newsprint. Bright white or glossy paper means a modern printing.
- Ads. The original has 1963 ads inside. Reprints carry modern ads or none.
- Restoration. Color touch or trimmed edges cut value sharply. CGC marks these copies with a purple label.
